HippieShippie’s Guide to India’s Top 5 Favourite Music Festivals!

The music scene in India is in that nascent (comparatively), exciting stage where every concert and festival announcement generates little bouts of glee among music-lovers. With new music festivals and gigs cropping up across the country and already established musical festivals pushing boundaries and bringing down never-seen- before acts from the world over, the Indian Music scene now means serious business. Here’s a breakdown of the top 5 must-go- to festivals in India this year:

1. Mahindra Blues Festival

Since its inception in 2011, the Mahindra Blues Festival has been instrumental in bringing down international blues legends like Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker Jr., Taj Mahal, and Walter Trout, among others, to Mumbai’s iconic Mehboob studios, and also giving Indian blues bands a great platform to perform alongside the best blues musicians in the world. For many of us the Mahindra Blues Fest has been our first live blues experience and it has fuelled a burgeoning interest in Blues music throughout the country. MBF completed its 7th edition this year with a fantastic international line-up and a bunch of homegrown talent.

2. NH7 Weekender

Memories of the first ever NH7 weekender in Pune pop up while writing this – the excitement was palpable since it was truly India’s foremost music festival which was on an international scale. Over the years, the happiest music festival has grown and travelled to different cities (the latest being Hyderabad and Shillong) with multiple stages for various genres. It has hosted many noteworthy International & Indian acts ranging from Mark Ronson, A.R Rahman, Steven Wilson, Mutemath among many many others, making for an eclectic music experience for a wide range of audiences. Small Tip: Don’t get too excited about catching all the acts – you’ll just end up running from one stage to another. Make sure you just chill and enjoy some of your favourite music!

3. Jodhpur Riff festival

This not-for-profit partnership project involving two of India’s leading heritage trusts: Mehrangarh Museum Trust and Jaipur Virasat Foundation has rightfully been nominated by Songlines magazine as “25 of the Best International Festivals” (2014, 2015). Timed to coincide with “Sharad Purnima” the brightest full moon of the year in north India, Jodhpur RIFF features a series of spectacular concerts and events based in and around Mehrangarh Fort. From Qawwali nights on candle-lit terraces to folk dances in the portico, RIFF attracts people from across the globe. The added attraction is the attendance of Jodhpur’s royalty that attend the festival every year, adding their grace and charm to the already picturesque festival landscape.

Testing our dreams!

While I was busy creating the art, the wife, who’s also an obsessiv)e graphic designer would brain storm with me (over my well-deserved drink at the end of the day). And one fine evening, the name clicked. It’s something we loved. Something we both could relate to. Something that really meant something special. And, a brand name was born. Logos were developed. And labels were now being tested. On animals 😛

Art, for your wardrobe!

My mind and my art opened up to a whole new world of possibilities. Original art that would look good on clothes! On t-shirts to begin with. And I started developing many artworks keeping this in mind. I’d often find my work yet being inspired by the sea, my travels around the world as a sailor, my undying love for Goa, the sunsets, the parties, the music I have grown up listening to, my family and friends and my little Beagle. They would all find a way through my brush and paints into the canvas – good energies, good vibes, and a whole lotta love!

The Eureka Moment!

I would always hold my paintings (which was documented in all its making stages by the wife!) in front of my chest and go show them to my wife after completing, while she would be drowned in her own sea of work. She’d look up and say something that would really brighten my day and I could pour open a well-deserved drink after a day’s hard work.

On one such display moment of my work, she went – ‘Hey! That looks like it’s a part of your t-shirt! It would look so cool on one! We should try it, right?” Somewhere in our heads, an idea was born.

And so it goes…

My most fulfilling, spiritual and enjoyable journey began. My art strangely found a way to blend into our little home. As a backdrop for a Buddha statue, as coasters, behind lamps, at the bar, and several other corners. Each day, something new. A song on loop – ‘And so it goes’ by Graham Nash which goes something like –

I’m the oil upon the water, I’m the lava in the flow
Resting like a rock beside the seaside
I’m the son and you’re the daughter
Of the stranger that we know,
Who gets a little stoned beside the wayside

Well, there’s one thing to try
Everybody knows
Music gets you high
Everybody grows
And so it goes

Music for the soul, and art that was quite literally, straight from the heart.

The Hippie who loved his canvas

While at sea, I would often carry a drawing book and some paints with me. I’d paint mostly when I’d have an overdose of watching Breaking Bad! On one of my shore leaves, back at home, with not much to do, I was cleaning up (read OCD). I found an old bag of paints and some canvases! At our little cosy home studio, I began to paint. And I wouldn’t realize when day would turn into night.  From trying to imitate other artists, to just experimenting with colours, I knew this is where my anchor had dropped.

The Shippie who loved his sunsets

And still does! My love for sailing went hand in hand with my love for sunsets. As I’d witness the most magnificent skies, with the most dreamy lighting, I would often be transported into another dimension. A crazy colourful energy full of love, hope and calm. Every sunset, is so unique, it has it’s own story to tell! And for you to make. This has and will always be one of my biggest inspirations to everything I narrate on a canvas with paints. I draw colours, stories and inspiration for my art from all those gorgeous sunsets I was lucky to absorb. Here’s a little glimpse, of some magic I was lucky to see at sea!
